EVs are clean to operate, and provide many direct benefits to consumers, as well as being well-known to be better for the environment. Canada was one of the primary nations to help pioneer the development of electric vehicles (EVs), beginning over a century ago.  As pollution in Canada increases, it’s time to promote electric cars as an eco-friendly alternative to gas and diesel-powered vehicles. Keep reading to learn more about EV rebates in Canada.

EV Rebates in Canada

According to the federal government, boosting electric vehicle adoption with a popular incentive program, called Incentives for Zero-Emission Vehicles (iZEV), is one way of tackling climate change.

The incentive program offers up to $5,000 in rebates with the purchase of a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV). The program began in 2019 and has been extended to March 2025. Canada considers battery-electric, hydrogen fuel cell and plug-in hybrid vehicles to be zero-emission vehicles. Battery-electric, longer-range plug-in hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles qualify for a $5,000 incentive, while shorter-range hybrid vehicles qualify for a $2,500 incentive.

An auto must be on the list of iZEV-approved models to be eligible for the incentive. A passenger car must also have an MSRP retail price of less than $55,000, while some models up to $65,000 are also eligible. A truck, SUV or van with an MSRP under $60,000 will be eligible to qualify for the incentive if it is purchased by a Canadian; higher trim levels for these vehicles will be eligible if the MSRP is less than $65,000.

The rebate is paid at the time of purchase from the dealer (or online), but only for the purchase of a new vehicle. Despite promises made by some dealers, used electric vehicles are not included in the iZEV eligibility list. Some states and provinces, however, do offer financial incentives for buying a pre-owned electric vehicle.

EV Rebates by Province or Territory

British Columbia (BC)

In addition to the Crown, most states and provinces also incentivize the purchase of an electric vehicle. British Columbia’s package of EV rebates includes up to $3,000 for purchasing new BEVs and PHEVs, assuming an MSRP of under $55,000 for most standard models. There are also incentives for home charging installations for condos, apartments and single-family homes.

BC also offers SCRAP-IT, a program offering EV rebates of up to $500 when trading in an old fuel-burning gas guzzler for an electric vehicle. This incentive covers new and secondhand EVs.

New Brunswick

With New Brunswick’s rebate program, electric car rebates of up to $5,000 are offered for new models and $2,500 for used electric vehicles.

Ontario

Plug’ N Drive is a non-profit organization in Ontario that provides a rebate of up to $1,000 for scrapping a used gas-powered vehicle, via participation in Ontario’s Scrappage Incentive program, as well as an $1,000 for the purchase of a pre-owned EV.

Quebec

When purchasing or leasing a new PHEV or BEV in Quebec, customers may receive up to a $7,000 incentive, but the total MSRP of the car must not exceed $60,000. Quebec’s new vehicle rebate system is particularly generous among the provinces. The maximum rebate for any EV is $7,000, while PHEVs will get a rebate of up to $5,000.

Yukon

Yukon government offers a $5,000 rebate with the purchase of a new zero-emission vehicle, and there is also a Level 2 home charger and shipping rebate for up to $1,500 in effect for used zero-emission cars. Combined with the iZEV discount, this means that buyers can get up to $11,500 back after purchasing a new EV.

Newfoundland and Labrador

Newfoundland offers $2,500 for new and used all-electric vehicles, and $1,500 for hybrids, through the NL Hydro EV Rebate Program. Adding this refund to the federal campaign, buyers might get $7,500 to drive an EV in NL.

Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia offers a rebate of up to $3,000 on new vehicles, and $2,000 on used vehicles. The vehicle needs to be a battery electric vehicle (BEV) or plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) with an MSRP of less than $60,000.

Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island began offering Canada’s most significant provincial EV program for used electric car rebates in April 2021.

Buying a new or used electric vehicle can net up to $5,000 in rebates, while hybrids can net $2,500. Buyers can get up to $10,000 off a brand-new model, when applied in tandem with the federal rebate. The provincial government will also provide a free Level 2 charger and additional rebate. However, the customer is to be responsible for the cost of installation.

How to Get an Electric Vehicle Rebate

Electric vehicle Rebates are acquired at point-of-purchase; therefore, the car dealership handles the paperwork and ensures the buyer gets the rebate.

During leasing, the rebate may be prorated. A 48-month lease gets the entire federal rebate, whereas a 24-month electric vehicle rental gets half the incentive.

Canada grants a 100% tax write-off for some ZEVs during the year they’re entered into commercial use, such as for traveling sales reps or delivery drivers. The tax write-off is restricted to $55,000.
