8 Reasons Why EVs Will Be Ahead of Gas Cars

You’re probably mistaken if you thought the transition to EVs would take decades. On the contrary, electric Vehicles are gradually becoming the most reasonable option not only in terms of cost but also for environmental sustainability.

As some countries and several U.S. states hint at banning fossil fuel-powered cars soon, the future we all talk about is fast approaching.

Here are more reasons why you may want to ditch your gas car for an EV.

1. EVs are becoming more affordable than gasoline cars.

The price tags on EVs have probably scared more people than anything else. Some cost as much as $10,000 higher than their gasoline counterparts. However, the initial purchase cost is nothing compared to the long-term saving the consumer stands to enjoy.

The price margin is slowly narrowing as manufacturers work to produce more affordable models. That, coupled with tax incentives, contribute to the steady rise in market consumption, which should trigger even lower prices in the coming days.

Also, EV drivers spend less on running and maintenance costs. This makes sense since electricity is cheaper than gasoline, and EVs have fewer movable parts and require fewer replacements.

2. EVs are as fast as fossil-fueled cars.

Regarding speed, it’s a “don’t judge a book by its cover” case. Although EVs are quieter than gasoline cars, they don’t let you down for speed and performance. However, suppose you love the thrill of a speeding race car. In that case, an electric vehicle may disappoint you as they operate on a single-speed. This limitation forces manufacturers to choose between top speed and acceleration. The better option is a balanced approach which means classic gasoline multi-gear cars win this one.

Nevertheless, EVs offer more than sufficient speed for everyday usage. Thanks to their simpler engines, they provide full torque without needing a rev boost. In addition, the absence of movable parts, such as gearboxes, makes them relatively more efficient.

3. EV range vs. fuel car range

You may worry that an EV may not match the range of your fuel car. However, the improvements in performance seen from significant manufacturers like KIA and Hyundai bring them to par.

Typically, the average gasoline car reaches up to 482 km (about 300 miles) on a full tank. However, most EVs are slowly catching up, ranging between 200-490 km( 124 to 304 miles) after a single charge. More luxurious models like BMW Ix xDrive 50 and Ford Mustang Mach E hit about 611 km( 380 miles) on a full charge.

 4. More than enough charging stations

One of the most notable benefits of having an electric car is that you can power it up in the comfort of your home. You can upgrade your home power system to accommodate a 240-Volt outlet that should charge your car faster compared to 120-Volts. An overnight charged battery should be enough for the next day.

Moreover, EV charging maps are growing significantly globally. With the growing demand for EVs and efforts by governments and private businesses to roll out incentives, there is more room for a more comprehensive EV charging network.

5. Faster EV charging time at your convenience.

With the technology subject to more improvement in the nearer future, fast-charging technology will save you even more time by cutting charging duration by more than 80%. This is not far-fetched as you can charge the 30 kW battery of a Nissan Leaf with a 22Kw fast charger in just 22 kW. The trend is soon to follow in several other models.

6. EVs are a greener choice.

The changes in climate and environment are forcing the world to consider more eco-conscious options for a sustainable future. EVs have risen as the cleaner and greener option for several reasons.

EVs use electrical energy, which is renewable, clean, and safe for the environment. Furthermore, they use Lithium-ion batteries with a lower carbon footprint, thus reducing emissions and pollution by more than half. Although stakeholders continue to recommend solutions to the primary concern of battery post-life usage, Repurposing batteries as energy storage solutions is a significant recommendation to address the issue.

7. There is enough grid to support EVs.

With the infrastructure already in place, the system may require a few upgrades, but nothing too over the top. Moreover, technology steps in to make a move seamless through fast charging and bi-directional charging. These two technologies facilitate shorter charging times and support renewable-heavy grids.

Smart charging systems boost the course further by balancing demand and supply. This means energy shifts according to capacity when electric cars are connected to smart chargers while leveraging off-peak hours.

8. Electric cars are safer than traditional cars.

The safety concerns around EVs majorly stem from the usage of high-voltage electrical systems and the flammability of their batteries. However, manufacturers are addressing these issues, and more measures are in the process to mitigate them.

On the flammability issue, it is worth noting that only one in every 100million Li-ion battery fires is likely to occur- as long as they are used appropriately. Additionally, fires involving EVs, unlike gas cars- are usually confined to the small area around the battery and do not spread to other parts as fast as a fossil fuel car fire would.

Secondly, the battery is protected with external aluminum plating, among other safety features, to protect the passenger. Therefore the chances of passenger injury in an electric vehicle are lower than in their fuel-powered counterparts.

Another concern would be the inherent silence that comes with EVs, which makes them more likely to hit passengers. However, some states require owners to mount noise devices on their EVs to reduce the number of accidents due to the lack of noise.
